Tracy Thomas, MA, NTP, CGP - Luncheon Speaker on "Food and Mood: How The Gut Influences The Brain.

This luncheon will focus on the new body of medical literature showing poor gut health to be a causal factor in chronic mental health conditions such as anxiety and depressive disorders. Known as the gut-brain axis, researchers are finding that there is constant bi-directional communication not only from the brain down to the gut, but from the gut up to the brain.

The collective landscape of the gut, including the trillions of microbes that live there, play an important role in the messages to the brain that directly affect mood and behavior. By improving the environment of the gut to support positive messaging, one can create the causes and conditions to improve mood and reduce perceptions of stress.

Topics covered:

  • How the gut communicates with the brain
  • Conditions in the gut that impact mood
  • How the food we eat changes messaging to the brain
  • The role of the microbiome in anxiety and depressive disorders
  • Ideal diet to optimize positive gut-brain communication
  • How negative emotional states affect microbial messaging in a negative feedback loop

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify 2 key medical studies showing a causal relationship between the gut and mood.
  • Participants will be able to name and identify 4 underlying physiological conditions that trigger anxiety and depressive disorders.
  • Participants will be able to state 5 dietary and lifestyle choices that increase beneficial and positive gut-brain messaging.

Tracy Thomas, MA, NTP, CGP is an accomplished gut-brain expert, specializing in nutrition and the microbiome. She brings to life how the food we eat changes the landscape of our gut and the microbes that live there, which in turn, send corresponding messages to the brain that impact mood. She holds a Master's Degree and is a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) and certified Gut and Psychology Syndrome Practitioner (CGP).
